The Action People’s Party (APP) on Saturday took a major political step ahead of the January 16, 2027 elections as party leaders, delegates, and stakeholders unanimously adopted Dr Chima Matthew Amadi, popularly known as Mazi Gburugburu, as the consensus candidate for the Imo East Senatorial District.

The event, which drew party faithful and delegates from various zones across the state, was marked by loud ovations, unity, and repeated declarations that the party had made the right decision in choosing a candidate many described as the best option for the forthcoming election.

The atmosphere became electrifying when the National Organising Secretary of the party, Obed Agu, introduced Dr Chima Matthew Amadi to the gathering, drawing a thunderous round of applause from the congregation.

Also present at the event were officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Imo State, alongside delegates and monitoring teams who witnessed the proceedings.

In his opening remarks, the National Chairman of the party, Barr. Uchenna Nnadi, specially recognised Mazi Gburugburu and other distinguished leaders and delegates who gathered to ensure the emergence of Dr Chima Amadi as the consensus candidate for the Imo East Senatorial seat.

He described the event as a historic moment for the party and the people of Imo State, stressing that the decision reached would positively shape the outcome of the coming election.

According to him, the party adopted the consensus option because after Dr Chima Amadi declared his intention to contest, every other aspirant willingly stepped down, convinced that he remained the most qualified and widely accepted choice.

“Our consensus candidate remains the best,” he declared.

The formal motion for Dr Chima Matthew Amadi’s adoption was moved by Nnah Ugochukwu, who stated that having successfully passed through the party’s screening process and being found worthy, and also standing as the sole aspirant, he should officially be certified as the consensus candidate for the Owerri Zone Senatorial seat.

The motion was seconded by Henry Chibueze, who reaffirmed the confidence of party members in the candidacy of Dr Chima Amadi.

Speaking after accepting the nomination, Dr Chima Matthew Amadi described the occasion as the first major step towards what he called the redemption of Imo State.

He stressed the importance of politics in nation-building, noting that any society that treats politics with levity is bound to fail.

Speaking further on the growing insecurity and kidnapping incidents across the state, Mazi Gburugburu maintained that any government unable to protect the lives and property of its citizens has no business occupying Government House.

He officially accepted his nomination as the APP candidate for Imo East Senatorial District and assured party faithful that he would lead the charge into the election with determination and resilience.

Also speaking at the event, Hon Matthew Nworgu said the desired change in Imo State must begin immediately and commended Dr Chima Amadi for leading what he described as a people-oriented movement within the APP.

He also appreciated the presence of INEC officials, noting that their attendance further strengthened the legitimacy and credibility of the process.

The event ended with a vote of thanks, after which attendees stood in unity to sing the National Anthem, bringing the historic gathering to a close.
